Life Sciences GrantNet April 15, 2009

The Life Sciences GrantNet is an information communication tool directed toward faculty interested in research and education programs with a focus on life science and technology. It provides a compendium of notices, program announcements, and requests for application from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Health Quality Research, the U.S. Department of Defense’s Army Medical Research and Material Command, and a number of private foundations providing funding for life science research.

Even faculty who do not necessarily identify their research interests with having potential life science applications are encouraged to review these funding opportunities, as many involve interdisciplinary research with behavioral, natural, and computer science and engineering applications.

Visit http://www.grants.gov and http://grants.nih.gov/grants/oer.htm to conduct your own search for life science funding opportunities.

Note: Rutgers' Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) internal deadline for completed applications is 5 days prior to the funding agency deadline. Submit proposals on-line using the ORSP Proposal Delivery System (PDS), or contact the Grant Specialist for your department or program for more information.

Revised New and Early Stage Investigator Policies (NOT-OD-09-013)

This notice describes changes in New Investigator policies stemming from the NIH Enhancing Peer Review Initiative (see http://enhancing-peer-review.nih.gov/index.html). Under this new policy, the NIH intends to support New Investigators at success rates comparable to those for established investigators submitting new applications. Early Stage Investigators (ESIs), as previously described on September 26, 2008 at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-08-121.html should comprise a majority of the New Investigators supported. Where possible, New Investigator applications will be clustered during review. This notice also advises New Investigators and ESIs that these NIH New Investigator Policies are limited to applications for traditional research project grant (R01) support. Accordingly, the NIH strongly encourages New Investigators, particularly ESIs, to apply for R01 grants when seeking first-time NIH funding.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) encourages new collaborative projects between investigators associated with the Integrative Cancer Biology Program (ICBP) or Tumor Microenvironment Network (TMEN) and researchers who are not involved with the program with which they propose to collaborate. This FOA is designed to facilitate new projects in integrative cancer biology and/or tumor microenvironment research and to extend current research conducted in the ICBP and TMEN programs through collaborations with a broader research community. Research projects proposed in response to this FOA should be collaborative and aligned with the missions of the ICBP or TMEN programs. In addition to proposing new research, these projects should leverage the resources and expertise currently available within the ICBP and TMEN communities, in order to extend and enhance the programs with new ideas, methods, expertise, and resources.

National Institutes of Health Rapid Access to Interventional Development (NIH-RAID) Program (X01) NIH Roadmap Initiatives
Application Receipt/Submission Date(s): May 15, 2009; September 15, 2009; January 15, 2010; May 14, 2010; September 15, 2010; January 14, 2011; May 16, 2011; September 15, 2011
http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-09-027.html

The NIH Roadmap for Medical Research (http://nihroadmap.nih.gov/) has established a program called NIH-RAID (Rapid Access to Interventional Development; http://nihroadmap.nih.gov/raid/) to make available on a competitive basis certain critical resources needed for the development of new therapeutic agents. The NIH-RAID program is intended to reduce some of the common barriers between laboratory discoveries and clinical trials of new therapeutic entities, and projects in both the early and late stages of preclinical development are suitable for NIH-RAID proposals. Approved NIH-RAID projects are completed using resources of the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Developmental Therapeutics Program (http://dtp.nci.nih.gov/) and the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute’s (NHLBI) Gene Therapy Resource Program (http://www.gtrp.org). NIH-RAID is not a grant program. Successful projects gain access to government contract resources, and are assisted by the NIH in establishing and implementing a product development plan. Projects are supported by individual Institutes and Centers within NIH and by the NIH Roadmap, through the Common Fund. The Common fund was created by the NIH in 2004 and enacted into law by Congress through the 2006 NIH Reform Act to support cross-cutting, trans-NIH programs. Institutes and Centers may request the inclusion of specific project milestones as a requirement for co-sponsorship of NIH-RAID projects.

The National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) solicits innovative applications for the development of new or improved instrumentation for biomedical research. Projects should propose tools that can be used by a wide range of biomedical or clinical researchers, and not limited to a specific organ or disease.
